Why Have DJ Sets Become So Short?

We remember the days when DJ sets would last an entire eventing, but now its rare to see extended sets outside of specialist events. Here’s our take on why hour-long DJ sets have become the norm.

From Storytelling to Spectacle

DJ sets were once marathons, often being three hours or more to allow for extended storytelling and genre-blending. Now, headline slots are often limited to one or two hours, forcing DJs to prioritise high-impact moments over gradual progression.

Attention Spans Are Shrinking

Social media has changed and popularised DJing. Platforms such as Tiktok thrive on quick, high-impact video-based content. As audiences grow accustomed to short-form entertainment, club culture has adapted, prioritising instant gratification and viral moments over slow-burning sets and subtlety.

Festival Influence on Club Culture

Festivals are a competitive market, and those with ultra-stacked line ups are winning. As a result, DJ sets have become shorter to accommodate the sheer volume of performances.  As festival-style programming spills into clubs, shorter sets have become the norm. The extended DJ set is now a rarity outside of specialist underground events.

Rising Fees, Shorter Sets

The cost of living crisis has turned the scene on its head – and DJ have fees soaring as a result.  Promoters can no longer afford extended sets, and are competing with bigger venues for tickets. Instead, lineups are packed with multiple names to sell more tickets.

A Struggling Club Scene

Clubs are closing at record rate and consumer habits are changing as a result. Paying more to see a diverse lineup of acts, rather than one DJ play an extended set, is now seen as offering greater value.

Does Shorter Mean Better?

Some argue that shorter sets bring more variety and energy to a night, while others believe they sacrifice the depth and progression that make dance music special.
